Using Botox To Treat Facial Synkinesis

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Beforeafterbotoxfacialsynkinesis 300x152 Using Botox To Treat Facial SynkinesisAs a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte with a unique training and knowledge in treating facial paralysis and Bell’s palsy, I’d like to let my patients know about a great treatment that can be used to help create facial balance after an episode of Bell’s palsy—Botox.

What Is Facial Synkinesis?

Facial synkinesis in Charlotte occurs after an episode of Bell’s palsy when the patient doesn’t regain full facial movement. Synkinesis is the inability to coordinate the individual muscles of half of the face.  It results in a wide range of both functional and aesthetic changes.  Common changes include:

  1. Narrowing of the eye during smiling

  2. Asymmetry of the smile

  3. Dimpling of the chin

  4. Asymmetry of the forhead

  5. Pulling sensation in the neck

For my patients in Charlotte, Synkinesis can have a negative impact on the quality of life and of a patient’s self image. Botox is excellent and the best method to improve the function and the appearance of the synkinetic face.  It is injected to muscles on both sides of the face to increase facial symmetry at rest and during animation.  It can be used to open a narrowed eye, soften the smile, and relieve the pulling senstation just to name a few of the positive effects of Botox used to treat facial synkinesis.

What Is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a disorder of the facial nerve that brings facial paralysis to one side of the face. Unlike other forms of facial paralysis, the cause of Bell’s palsy isn’t entirely understood, though many medical professionals believe it to be a result of a virus affecting the facial nerve. When the facial nerve becomes inflamed, the necessary neural input is blocked which prevents movement of the facial muscles.  Initially, Bell’s palsy in Charlotte is commonly treated with anti-virals and steroids. In nearly 90% of patients affected with the condition, facial movement is regained over the course of the following months after diagnosis, though it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the condition will run its course.

What Is A Non-Surgical Browlift?

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Kulbersh NonSurgicalBrowlift4 large 300x203 What Is A Non Surgical Browlift? An aging face cannot be escaped, but it can be prolonged and managed. Often times, one of the biggest areas of concern for individuals is the brow region, as this part of our face tends to be utilized tremendously through our entire lives in making expressions. If a patient isn’t quite ready to undergo surgery to overcome forehead drooping or excessive fine lines and wrinkles, a great procedure that I often recommend is known as a non-surgical or liquid browlift in Charlotte that can be performed in one quick office visit.

What Is A Liquid Browlift?

A non-surgical or liquid browlift is a procedure that I perform at my office in Charlotte for individuals who are experiencing a slightly sagging brow with age or for those beginning to develop unwanted wrinkles and fine lines. As our brow begins to droop, it often results in excess skin becoming noticeable over our eyes, leaving a tired and aged appearance.

Depending on the severity of a drooping brow, I’ll develop a treatment plan comprised of chemicals like Botox or Dysport, facial fillers in Charlotte, or possibly both. A chemical browlift using Botox and Dysport actually helps to weaken the muscles that pull our brow downwards, therefore allowing it to be released upwards to its youthful resting position. When I use Botox or Dysport to help a patient overcome a drooping brow, I carefully inject the chemicals to continue to keep the muscles responsible for raising the eyebrows in their proper place, resulting in a very subtle and natural lift. When facial fillers are utilized during a liquid browlift, their main role is to help combat volume loss in the space directly above the eyebrows. By adding volume to this area, it pulls the skin outward and upward, creating a natural and balanced elevation.

Patients who often make excellent candidates to undergo the non-surgical procedure are those who are not quite yet seeing a dramatic aged appearance on their face, but who are only beginning to notice miniscule signs of volume loss, wrinkles, fine lines, and skin lax. Patients who are beginning to appreciate deep folds or extreme brow sagginess should consider a surgical browlift, which can be performed with the most advanced minimally invasive techniques to lessen recovery time, bruising, swelling, and pain associated with the procedure.

Top Secret Wrinkle Causing Routines

Kulbersh Cannula1 2 13 13 11 300x133 Top Secret Wrinkle Causing Routines

A non-surgical eyelift can smooth under eye wrinkles and replace lost volume.

We’re all aware of some of the major causes that bring early and unwanted wrinkles to our face such as sun exposure, not enough sleep, and caffeine. However, there are several habits that you may not realize can create wrinkles on your face. In this blog, I share some of the lesser known  habits with my patients in Charlotte that cause wrinkles on the face.

1. Stress

We have all heard the saying “Don’t make a sad face because it could  stay that way.” Although this is an old wives tale, there may be some truth to the statement. Because stress can cause a person to become worrisome and frown, the muscles in your face can actually conform to those movements, leading to marionette lines around the lips, crow’s feet around the eyes, and even 11 lines in the middle of your forehead. One of the best ways to prevent stress induced facial aging is to be aware of your level of stress. If you begin to feel stressed, try to relax by  taking  a deep breath, meditating,  or exercising.

2. Wearing Contacts

You’re probably thinking, “How in the world can wearing contacts cause my face to wrinkle?” Think about this—the average contact user puts contacts in their eyes and takes them out multiple times each day. When this takes place, the skin around your eyes becomes overly stretched due to the constant pulling mechanism of the skin around your eyelid, which in turn can lead to wrinkles. If you’re beginning to appreciate  wrinkles around your eyes and are a contact wearer, an easy and ideal treatment to fix crow’s feet is Botox, which I can inject in my office for my patients in Charlotte. Botox helps to relax the muscles around the eyes, making it difficult for the muscles to move and cause excess wrinkling.

3. Rubbing Your Face With A Towel

We’ve all done it—sometimes we’re running late in the morning, and our only choice is to wash our face quickly and dry our skin even faster. However, constantly rubbing our faces with towels can cause skin to stretch out and become wrinkled, especially in fragile areas under the eyes. Next time you wash your face, make sure you pat your skin dry with the towel—no more rubbing!

How Does Botox Work?

Friday, January 18th, 2013

How Does Botox Work? For the past several years, Botox has consistently been at the top of the list for most sought after cosmetic procedures. Year by year, the number of people seeking the treatment increases, and for good reasons—Botox is truly beneficial for people of all ages, races, and ethnicities, no matter what part of the aging process they are in. With so many people seeking Botox across the world and even at my practice in Charlotte, I wanted to take the time to explain to my patients something commonly overlooked: How does Botox actually work?

All About Botox

Simply put, Botox works by temporarily blocking nerves, which result in the inability to move facial muscles.  Muscle can cause wrinkles similar to an iron causing a wrinkle in a shirt.  Every time muscles move, they create a crease or wrinkle in the skin.  By weakening the muscle that causes the crease, it allows time for the skin to repair itself and the wrinkle softens and disappears overtime.   Though Botox is a very common treatment for middle-aged men and women seeking relief from the aging process, Botox injections can be extremely helpful in preventing the aging process in people in their 20’s and 30’s.  Botox in these patients can prevent the formation of some wrinkles and can also retrain the muscles to not move in a fashion that creates some wrinkles.

How Long Does Botox Take To Work?

According to a recent study by New Beauty Magazine, hundreds of women were asked how long they believed it took to see the final results of Botox treatments. Surprisingly, the answers ranged from 24 hours to 5 weeks! At my practice in Charlotte I typically advise patients that although everyone is different, it’s well-within normal range to see results from Botox injections between 2-5 days post treatment.

If you’re considering Botox injections, it’s important to visit an experienced injector for your treatment. Though Botox is an extremely safe procedure when properly performed, the procedure becomes much more risky when people don’t research their injectors, which can result in  unpleasing aesthetic results.

Botox For Poker Players: Introducing Poker-tox

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

iStock 000016477216XSmall 300x214 Botox For Poker Players: Introducing Poker toxGet ready for a new trend in facial plastic surgery: pokertox. With the rise in popularity of both poker and Botox, it seems like a natural progression. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte who specializes in injectable treatments like Botox, I’d like to share the idea behind pokertox.

What Is Pokertox?

Coined by a cosmetic surgeon, Pokertox involves a regimen of Botox with the aim to help a poker player manage their poker face. A poker face is the ability to hide any unconscious signs about a poker players hand that may give his fellow players clues to if he has a good or bad hand. If you’ve ever participated in poker, it’s easy to realize how important it is to have a good “poker face”.

Take this, for example. Let’s say you’re playing a game of cards, and you’re dealt a great hand. Without even realizing it, you’ve probably moved or twitched small areas arounds your eyes. These tiny movements can be identified by other players at the table and may give insight on the player’s hand and ultimately be the difference of winning and losing thousands of dollars. Poker players that have typical facial movements that might give away their poker face are turning to Botox. Botox is injected into specific muscles in the face to weaken or paralyze them. Poker players are now using Botox to help create their poker face and we get the term, pokertox.

Some players believe pokertox can give them a slight advantage while others disagree and believe that poker relies heavily on the betting trends of opponents, skill, and experience. I personally believe in a competitive game of poker where thousands of dollars are at stake, if Botox can help you win by preventing a movement in your face that can give away your hand, then it could be a great option.

 Botox At Carolina Facial Plastics

When it comes to Botox, believe that if the procedure can provide you with the goals that you’re looking to achieve and is done in the correct hands, the procedure is safe and effective., No matter whether or not you’re a poker player or a middle-aged woman, it’s apparent that Botox has many uses from smoothing wrinkles, preventing excess sweating in the armpits, shrinking large masseter muscles and improving ones poker face.

Plastic Surgery: Not Just For Women

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Plastic Surgery: Not Just For WomenIf you looked at a typical bathroom counter of a man and woman, you would see differences between the two areas.  Men typically have a toothbrush, razor, cologne, and possibly some eye care products.  Woman may have a combination of hair dryers, straighteners, blush, foundation, eye liner, facial creams, facial masks, etc.  It’s no secret that women have a few more products on the market as opposed to men. In many places, it is more socially acceptable for women to take small steps to start fighting the aging process. Small steps can be considered dying their hair, makeup techniques, and using medical grade skin care.

However, at the risk of being viewed as unmanly, a man is less likely to start taking the steps to help him age gracefully or enhance his natural good looks.  He  could borrow his wife’s moisturizer, but what happens if his buddies find out? With ‘baby-boomer’ men perhaps being the first group of middle-aged males to ever consider different types of plastic surgery, there is one major difference in providing cosmetic procedures for men rather than women—they don’t want to look like they’ve had anything done.

The Best Plastic Surgeries For Men

As an experienced facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I understand the importance of customizing all facial plastic surgery procedures for men. One of the most important things that I try to do when providing surgeries for males is to make sure that their facial features are balanced, and that no one can figure out why they look so good for their age.

Because striving for a natural result is so important, there are several different surgeries for men that can help turn back the aging process without raising an excessive amount of suspicion. At Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, I often perform the following cosmetic procedures for men.

Botox

If you’re looking for a procedure that is quick, painless, and offers results extremely fast, Botox might be right for you. Botox can help reduce the fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet that appear on our faces with age. When using Botox on males, I make sure to leave movement in the face.  I can use Botox to soften the wrinkles of the forehead and between the eyes, but in a way where the patient is still able to move his eyebrows.  I think this creates the best and most natural result for my male patients having Botox in Charlotte.  After just one treatment, you’ll notice a refreshed looking appearance.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelift, can help rid a man of the excess skin around his upper eyelids or the puffy, dark lower eyelid bags that occur as we age. Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that takes just over an hour to perform, and the results of the surgery can create eyes that give off a more awake and more alert appearance.  Blepharoplasty technique is different when compared to women.  In males, I keep the incisions lower on the eye to create a low eyelid crease.  A high eyelid crease can feminize an eye and create an unnatural result.

Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are a great choice for men who want to put volume back into their face that has been slowly lost over time. Fillers are fantastic for treating smile lines, under eye circles, and can even help reshape the jawline, create a stronger chin or diminish under eye circles. Other great procedures for men include facelifts, neck lifts, and chin augmentation.

Can Botox Really Make Me Happier?

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Happy After Botox 300x199 Can Botox Really Make Me Happier? On our recent honeymoon, my wife read the popular book, “The Happiness Project” written by Gretchen Rubin which is an account of the year that Gretchen spent trying to find happiness.  My wife read excerpts of the book to me where Gretchen discussed the relationship between happiness and attractiveness.  Does our attractiveness really affect our happiness?  As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte and a Botox specialist, my wife knew that I would get a kick out of this.

In the book, Gretchen notes that people who receive Botox are happier then those who don’t because, due to their paralyzed muscles, they are unable to make angry or sad faces.  There is a psychological hypothesis, the facial feedback hypothesis, which states that forcing your lips into a smile will psychologically result in one feeling happy.  Similarly, scowling or frowning can make one feel sad or upset.  Botox is commonly injected into the glabella and forehead area to prevent the formation of a frown or angry face.  According to the facial feedback hypothesis, these expressions can lead us to feeling mad and upset.  In theory, preventing the formation of the frown or scowl with Botox will help prevent a sad or upset feeling, resulting in an overall improved mood.

I agree with the facial feedback hypothesis as I believe smiling and appearing happy will in turn result in an improved and happier mood.  I cannot prove that Botox will improve people’s moods, but it does appear possible.  I believe this could be an unintended but positive result from Botox injections.

As a Charlotte Botox specialist and experienced facial plastic surgeon, I would be honored to offer complimentary consultations for those interested in maintaining a youthful appearance or for those who might just want to bring a smile back to their face!

Check out Gretchen’s blog, The Happiness Project, where she writes weekly and discusses happiness!

Is Your iPhone Giving You Wrinkles?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Is Your iPhone Giving You Wrinkles? In today’s world, people have enough outside stresses to blame for their wrinkles and aging face. However, with the invention of the smart phone, there came a new platform for wrinkles—the iPhone squint. With the amount of time that people spend on their cell phones increasing every year, it’s no wonder that your iPhone or Blackberry might be to blame for your crow’s feet or brow lines. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I will provide tips to my patients on how they can avoid falling victim to the cell-phone squint, and what you can do to erase your wrinkles and crow’s feet.

Avoiding The Cell-Phone Squint

Imagine the amount of time that you spend on your cell phone every day—for most Americans, cell phones are used not only for phone calls, but for sending countless text messages, browsing the internet, sending emails, and even shopping. It’s no secret that all of this time certainly adds up, adding a great deal of eye strain that causes us to squint. This is what ultimately results in formation of fine lines and wrinkles around our eyes. If you’ve ever found yourself locked in a gaze with your smart phone, here are some helpful tips to avoid excessive facial strain:

Turn Down Your Brightness

One thing that people don’t realize is that the brightness on our phone is controllable, and a phones factory setting usually comes with it set at the brightest level.  Long term visualization of the bright screen causes facial strain. Simply turning down the brightness  won’t only extend your battery life but it will also will help prevent wrinkles and the formation crows feet.

Take A Break

Cell phones  are in essence miniature computers. It’s important to remember to take a break for a few moments. It’s important  to allow your eyes to relax and readjust. This break will decrease eye strain that leads to eye wrinkles.

Make Your Text Bigger

How many times a day are you squinting to see a text message or an email on your cell phone?  We probably squint more looking at our phone than being outside in the sun.  Increasing the text size on your phone will help prevent eye strain and wrinkles.

Botox For Wrinkles

If you are still experiencing wrinkles around you eyes after changing your cell phone settings, Botox may be a great option for you.  As a Botox expert in Charlotte, I can help patients reduce and diminish their unwanted facial lines around their eyes. Botox is injected with minimal discomfort and requires no down time.  Patients may continue with their everyday activities immediately after leaving the office.

To learn more about Botox and whether or not you might be a good candidate, please contact my office today by calling (704) 323-5090 to schedule your initial consultation. Remember, it’s very important to enlist the help of a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte for your Botox needs to ensure that your injections are properly performed and that you your needs are met entirely.

Simple Guide to Getting the Most Beautiful and Natural Looking Wedding Day Face

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Simple Guide to Getting the Most Beautiful and Natural Looking Wedding Day FaceSara, my patient care coordinator at Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, was recently married.   Three months prior to her wedding, we came up with an affordable and natural looking plan to get her face looking great for her big day.  Sara is in her mid-twenties and is already a beautiful woman, but I came up with a plan to enhance her natural beauty.

The plan initiated 3 months before her wedding.  Sara was using good skin care products, but she wanted to take it to the next level to make sure her skin was glowing.  She changed her regime to a combination of Image Skin Products.  For her skin type she was using:

Morning:

-          Ormedic Face Wash

-          Vital C Hydrating Serum

-          Max Eye Cream

-          Daily Defense Matte Sunscreen and Moisturizer Combo

Night:

-          Total Facial Cleanser

-          Max Facial Cream

-          Max Eye Cream

For the wedding day, we really wanted to make her eyes pop.  Her plan was a combination of Latisse and Botox.  It takes 16 weeks to get a full correction using Latisse.  Sara used the product for 12 weeks and got her desired results.  The effects of Latisse were clearly evident as her eyelashes grew longer became thicker.

As a Charlotte Botox expert, we chose to inject Botox 1 month before the wedding date.  This ensured enough time for the best results.  It was used to soften the wrinkles between her eyes and the horizontal lines on her forehead.  The Botox was also used to give her a subtle browlift that made her eyes appear more open, vibrant, and awake.   In her case, it was important to use a conservative dose of Botox as I wanted to ensure she was able to make all of her facial expressions.  The facial expressions caught on film during the wedding are priceless, and I wanted to ensure that those moments were captured.

As a Charlotte facial cosmetic surgeon, I take great joy working with brides to enhance their natural beauty.  Depending on the age and goals of the patient, I work with them to create a plan to have them looking their best on their special day.

Botox For Acne and Large Pores

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Botox has many uses in medicine both for aesthetic and functional reasons.  It has been safely used in medicine for over 20 years.  A new hot topic regarding Botox is its possible use to treat acne and large pores.  A dermatologist did the first known study to evaluate this question.  As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I was curious about the study so I paid 15 dollars to purchase to his article describing the study.

In the study, 2o patients were evaluated if they had an improvement in their acne and pore size after injecting Botox in the most superficial layer of the skin.  By only subjective testimonials by his patients, 17/20 of the patients had improvements.  The study did not comment on the amount of Botox or the frequency of injections.

This one small study was poorly designed has garned national attention.  It has been picked up by multiple media sources.  This study in now way demostrates that Botox would be a safe or effective treatment for acne or large pores.  It is a little upsetting that such a small and inconsequential studied has garnered so much attention when there is so much good medical research that is performed everyday.

From reading this article, it is not clear that Botox would an option for treating acne or large pores.  This is an example why it is important to dig deep to learn the facts and reasons that influence facial plastic surgeons decision making processes.
