How Obamacare is Effecting Facial Fillers in Charlotte

Monday, June 10th, 2013

How Obamacare is Effecting Facial Fillers in Charlotte“Obamacare” or the American health affortibily act may have an effect on your facial fillers in Charlotte.  The types of fillers in question include hyaluranic acid based fillers like Restylane, Juvaderm, and Perlane as well as collagen stimulator Sculptra.  Obamacare has added multiple taxes to the health care industry, and one of the newer taxes is a 2.3% tax on medical device manufacturers. Medical device manufacturers make every possible piece of equipment or medical device used in and on the body.  Some of these are large fortune 500 companies, including the makers of popular facial fillers  Allergan and Valent.  Allergan produces and sells Botox and Juvederm, while Valant produces and sells Dysport, Resylane, Perlane, and Sculptra.  These companies are now required to pay an additional 2.3% tax on the profit of all of these products.  For these reasons, many experts expect medical device manufactors to raise their prices to cover the added cost and therefore shifting the tax onto the patients, hospitals, and health insurance companies.

The manufactors of all facial fillers recently raised their prices approximately 2.3%.  While I cannot prove this was a direct effect from the Obamacare tax, it seems likely.  I would expect the prices of all facial fillers to increase steadily over the next few months to years to cover this added tax.

In the grand scheme of medicine, the added increase of the cost to facial fillers in Charlotte is secondary to this new tax and is not a catastrophic event.  The addition of this tax on the entire industy of medical device companies will have a much larger impact.  The ultimate result of the tax on the health care industry remains to be seen.

Facial Fillers in Charlotte

To help my patients, I recently placed a large order of facial fillers at the old price before the price increase.  This will help keep the cost of facial fillers in Charlotte down for the foreseeable future. My patients will still be able to enjoy excellent and natural results without worrying about the burden of the tax increase.

What Is A Non-Surgical Browlift?

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Kulbersh NonSurgicalBrowlift4 large 300x203 What Is A Non Surgical Browlift? An aging face cannot be escaped, but it can be prolonged and managed. Often times, one of the biggest areas of concern for individuals is the brow region, as this part of our face tends to be utilized tremendously through our entire lives in making expressions. If a patient isn’t quite ready to undergo surgery to overcome forehead drooping or excessive fine lines and wrinkles, a great procedure that I often recommend is known as a non-surgical or liquid browlift in Charlotte that can be performed in one quick office visit.

What Is A Liquid Browlift?

A non-surgical or liquid browlift is a procedure that I perform at my office in Charlotte for individuals who are experiencing a slightly sagging brow with age or for those beginning to develop unwanted wrinkles and fine lines. As our brow begins to droop, it often results in excess skin becoming noticeable over our eyes, leaving a tired and aged appearance.

Depending on the severity of a drooping brow, I’ll develop a treatment plan comprised of chemicals like Botox or Dysport, facial fillers in Charlotte, or possibly both. A chemical browlift using Botox and Dysport actually helps to weaken the muscles that pull our brow downwards, therefore allowing it to be released upwards to its youthful resting position. When I use Botox or Dysport to help a patient overcome a drooping brow, I carefully inject the chemicals to continue to keep the muscles responsible for raising the eyebrows in their proper place, resulting in a very subtle and natural lift. When facial fillers are utilized during a liquid browlift, their main role is to help combat volume loss in the space directly above the eyebrows. By adding volume to this area, it pulls the skin outward and upward, creating a natural and balanced elevation.

Patients who often make excellent candidates to undergo the non-surgical procedure are those who are not quite yet seeing a dramatic aged appearance on their face, but who are only beginning to notice miniscule signs of volume loss, wrinkles, fine lines, and skin lax. Patients who are beginning to appreciate deep folds or extreme brow sagginess should consider a surgical browlift, which can be performed with the most advanced minimally invasive techniques to lessen recovery time, bruising, swelling, and pain associated with the procedure.

Get Kissable Lips & Long Lashes Year Round

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

Get Kissable Lips & Long Lashes Year RoundWith Valentine’s Day here, I’ve been noticing an increase over the past month in the amount of patients seeking fillers for their lips and Latisse for longer and thicker eyelashes. Even though the biggest date night of the year is a great time to pull out all the stops to look fantastic, I’d like to let me patients know how simple it is to continue looking beautiful and natural year round.  With non-invasive treatments like Juvederm and Latisse, maintaining your Valentine’s Day look week after week has never been easier.

Fillers For Plump Lips

Because plump lips are a staple of Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be a good time to discuss how I help my patients in Charlotte achieve their ideal lip fullness with the help of fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane. Patients often make good candidates to undergo this procedure if they’ve lost volume in their lips, have fine lines surrounding their lips, or desire a fuller and pouty lip to enhance their smile. Because the lips are one of the most sensitive areas on the face, I understand the importance of making the procedure as comfortable for my patients as possible, which I do by utilizing a needleless filler technique.

With the help a cannula, I’m able to inject fillers without causing any additional trauma to the lips, resulting in an even smoother recovery for patients allowing them to return to their normal activities immediately. To prevent the appearance of duck lips, I inject the deeper fat pads of the lip.  In this manner, the lips appear fuller, but do not stick out farther from the face.

Latisse

Did you know that eyes with short and thin lashes can appear smaller than they actually are? To help lengthen short or thin eyelashes, Latisse is a medication that I often prescribe for my patients in Charlotte. The active ingredient in Latisse, bimatoprost, is the only FDA approved agent to help improve the length and fullness of eyelashes. Latisse is easy to use and is applied at home on a nightly basis. Though results can vary from person to person, it’s very common to see an improvement in the length of your eyelashes in as little as 8 weeks with full results being noticeable in 12-16 weeks. Ultimately, longer and thicker eyelashes can improve  the appearance of the eyes and facialharmony.

The Best Cosmetic Treatments For The Holidays

Monday, November 26th, 2012

MP900440277 203x300 The Best Cosmetic Treatments For The Holidays It’s hard to believe that 2012 is almost over, which means the holiday season is just around the corner. At Carolina Facial Plastics, I want my patients to know that there is still time to get a fantastic and youthful glow before having to attend holiday parties and family festivities. With the help of facial fillers and injectable treatments like Botox, I can offer a solution for taking care of wrinkles, fine lines, and even adding more volume back into your face with several different treatments that require no down time, resulting in little to no bruising or swelling. These treatments can create a natural look instantly at my office in Charlotte.

Facial Fillers

One of the best treatments a person can undergo to add volume to an aging face and see results rather quickly is the use of facial fillers.   The added volume can create a vibrant, alert and awake appearance.

I use facial fillers including Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, , and Perlane to help add facial volume into a variety of areas. It can be placed under the eyes and checks to eliminate eye bags, on the jawline to reduce jowls, in the temples to reduce hallowing, and to soften marionette and smile lines.  During your consultation, we will come up with the best plan to find the facial filler for your unique needs  and concerns. Facial fillers offer patients a subtle yet powerful result in the fight against aging while also being very safe. As an experienced facial plastic surgeon, I prefer to use needle-less injections known as a blunt tip cannula, which result in an even smoother non-invasive treatment and recovery time for patients.

Botox

If you’re looking for a quick touch up before that last minute holiday party, Botox can take years off of your appearance in just one quick and short office visit. Botox works to weaken the facial muscles, most often around our eyes and forehead, which ultimately result in diminished fine lines, wrinkles, and even crow’s feet. Within a few days, patients not only look younger, but feel younger as well. There are virtually no side effects to this treatment, meaning that you can go about your normal every day activities immediately and upon exiting my practice. For a pain-free holiday appearance booster, Botox may be just the ticket for you!

Youth is Fleeting; Smooth Skin Doesn’t Have to Be

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

The aging process takes its toll on the body in many ways. The skin is perhaps one of the most visible reminders that youth can’t last forever. Over time, your body starts to lose its ability to produce collagen and the elastic fibers that once kept your skin looking firm and smooth. Wrinkles set in and your face can appear hollow, or worse, begin to sag in certain places. Stop worrying; frowning only makes the wrinkles worse. Instead, visit your cosmetic surgeon in Charlotte for a plethora of potential treatments, such as Radiesse, that can rejuvenate your appearance.

Skin is Layers Deep

Youthful skin has a firm, almost plump look about it, while older skin appears thinner; similar to comparing a juicy grape with a raisin. The skin is the largest organ in your body, and is actually comprised of many layers, which are grouped into two major layers: the epidermis and dermis. The top layer — or epidermis — you can actually see; it is composed of cells that have been keratinized, which waterproofs them and makes them strong. The underlying layer, or dermis, contains collagen, protein, elastic fibers and other connective tissues. This layer supplies the epidermis with nutrients to help repair the outer skin and keep it healthy.

The Fountain of Youth

Drinking water and staying hydrated can go a long way to keeping your entire body, including your skin, more healthy. But when it comes to wrinkles and those deep grooves around your mouth, you need something stronger. Enter Radiesse and the other dermal fillers available in Charlotte. Dermal fillers are placed under the skin in an effort to “plump” it up, helping to lessen the severity of deep lines and wrinkles. Some dermal fillers, like Radiesse, actually help the skin improve its appearance on its own.

Radiesse

In Charlotte, Dr. Jonathan Kulbersh offers Radiesse as a dermal filler. It’s made of calcium-based microspheres that actually stimulate collagen growth, immediately adding volume and lift to your face. Because the skin now has what it needs to make more of its own collagen, Radiesse results can last up to a year. It is safe to use on the face as well as the hands.

Needle-Shy?

If you don’t like the idea of getting multiple injections, you don’t have to. Dr. Kulbersh employs techniques he learned studying in Beverly Hills under world-renowned plastic surgeons. He uses needle-less techniques that utilize a blunt tip cannula and a small needle. A few sticks with the tiny needle allows the cannula to pass into the skin, pushing aside tissues and blood vessels rather than cutting through them like a large needle would. This technique decreases healing time and reduces chances of bruising, which means you can show off your new, youthful skin faster!

What Are in the Facial Fillers that I Use at My Facial Cosmetic Surgery Practice in Charlotte?

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

As a Charlotte cosmetic surgeon, I use facial fillers to replace lost volume and reshape the face to a more youthful proportion.  Whenever I am performing a procedure, I want my patients to be well informed about the facial fillers that I use.  I commonly receive questions regarding the composition of fillers.  Generally, there are 2 types of fillers:

1)      Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

  1. Restylane
  2. Perlane
  3. Juvederm

2)      Collagen Stimulators

  1. Sculptra
  2. Radiesse

Hyaluronic acid sounds like a bad substance because it contains the word “acid.” Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that the body produces daily.  It functions to support all of the cells in the body.   Typically, Restylane, Juvederm, or Perlane will last 6 -12 months.  It will resolve faster in areas that are constantly moving, such as the mouth, as opposed to still areas, such as the temples. Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm differ in their thickness and swelling rates after the procedure.  Juvederm tends to swell the most while Perlane in the thickest.  Restylane is in the middle.

Charlotte Sculptra1 300x26 What Are in the Facial Fillers that I Use at My Facial Cosmetic Surgery Practice in Charlotte?

Sculptra’s fancy medical name is poly-l-lactic acid.  That is same material that is used in a line of commonly used sutures which have been popular for years.  Sculptra is very safe when placed in the face by a trained injector.  It stimulates the body to produce collagen which replenishes the lost volume of the face.  The results typically last 2-3 years.  Depending on the amount of volume lost, more than one session of Sculptra may be required.

Radiesse is composed of Source calcium hydroxyl apatite , a substance that is produced by our bones.  When injected into the face, it will fill the area and stimulate the body to produce collagen.  It typically lasts for one  year depending on its location.  I do not use it around the eyes or in the lips because it may leave lumps or bumps.

I hope this serves as a synopsis for the composition of the different facial fillers I use in my cosmetic surgery practice in Charlotte.  For more information about facial fillers click here.

What is the New Plastic Surgery Trend?….Brotox!

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Males are the fastest growing demographic of cosmetic procedure patients, and because of this trend, the term “Brotox” has been coined.  Males most commonly undergo chin implants, rhinoplasty, hair transplantation, and non-surgical treatments such as lasers and fillers. According to a patient on The Today Show, receiving a rhinoplasty, chin implant, and filler improved his business, gave him a more positive outlook, and enhanced his self-esteem.  It is very common that men who receive plastic surgery feel more confident in their personal and professional lives.

Uses for Facial Fillers Continue to Expand

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Facial fillers, such as Perlane, Restylane, or Juvederm have many uses to improve facial aesthetics.  The standard uses that are commonly used are:

-  Filling in the tear trough  (eye bags)

-  Improving smile lines

-  Helping to define the cheekbones

- Creating a stronger chin

In addition, there is one tell-tale sign of aging that is typically neglected, and that is the earlobe.  As we age, the earlobe get stretched out, elongates, and becomes thin.   This area can be easily treated to help achieve a balanced look during facial rejuvenation procedures.

Young appearing earlobe Uses for Facial Fillers Continue to Expand

A young earlobe is full of volume, without wrinkles, and not stretched.

ealdery earlobe Uses for Facial Fillers Continue to Expand

An elderly earlobe is thin, wrinkled, and stretched.

The Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery did a recent demonstration to the New York media using facial fillers to give volume to the earlobe.  I am glad to see that they are bringing awareness to this use for fillers, and I will also increase awareness of the use of earlobe fillers for my patients here in Charlotte.

I believe that there is a lack of consideration for the earlobe during facelifts in Charlotte. Typically, patients undergoing a facelift have long and thin earlobes that do not look harmonious after the surgery.  During the facelift, I will shorten the earlobe to a youthful proportion that helps bring the face into balance.  This can also be done as a stand-alone procedure in the office.

Facial plastic aesthetics, procedures, and surgeries are dependent on accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, and attention to small details.  I believe one small detail that should not be overlooked is evaluation and treatment of the earlobes.

The Locations of Fat in the Face and How I Use This Information with Facial Fillers

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Why is knowledge of the anatomy important when injecting facial fillers in Charlotte?

All surgeons must master the human anatomy before they can operate.  In facial plastic surgery, the difference of a few millimeters can be the difference between good and great results.

There are many options for facial fillers (Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Sculptra) in Charlotte.  As a facial cosmetic surgeon, I believe a mastery of the facial anatomy is a per-requisite for using facial fillers.  I use my knowledge of the facial fat compartments while injecting facial fillers, and believe that this knowledge is the difference between mediocre and great results.

What is my unique approach to using facial fillers?

The standard approach is to inject a facial filler to fill a specific line.  This is most commonly done to fill “smile lines” in Charlotte.  While this may be the result some patients are looking for, I believe there are better ways to inject which produce an even better outcome.  All young people have smile lines and I believe overfilling them produces unnatural looking results.

In my opinion, fillers should be used to fill in areas of the face that have lost volume.  We know that a loss of fat in specific compartments of the face is one aspect that contributes to facial aging.  The different compartments are:

Fat compartments to be injected by facial fillers in Charlotte The Locations of Fat in the Face and How I Use This Information with Facial Fillers

When I analyze a face for possible filler injections, I look to fill the specific fat departments that have lost volume.  When volume is replaced from the location where it was lost, it creates the best results for my patients.  I can also fill different fat pads to help correct areas of concern for my patients.

What should patients be asking when considering facial fillers in Charlotte?

Often patients will ask what the best facial filler is for their specific situation.  While there are many different fillers, different locations in the face to use those facial fillers, and many different techniques for injections, I believe the most important part of using facial fillers in Charlotte is choosing the most qualified injector.
