The Truth Behind Beauty Sleep

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

The Truth Behind Beauty SleepIt’s happened to all of us at one point or another, and sometimes more frequently than we would like. Without sleep, it seems like no amount of coffee, makeup, or exercise can truly cover up the fact that we’re tired. As a board certified head and neck surgeon in Charlotte who specializes in facial plastic surgery, I spend my time helping patients look and feel their best, and would like to shed light on the true meaning and importance of getting enough beauty sleep.

The term ‘beauty sleep’ comes from the idea that if our bodies don’t get enough rest each night, our appearance begins to change with dark under eye circles, premature wrinkling, and an overall tired appearance. If you don’t think this is true, think again.

Stress is one of the biggest factors in aging.  When our body doesn’t get an adequate amount of time in bed, your skin becomes compromised due to a drop in healthy and necessary collagen. In addition, stress has been proven to lower the amount of melanin in the skin that helps to keep our complexion radiant and healthy. If that isn’t enough information to get you back into bed, how about this: our cells act 10-15 years older than they actually are when our body is tired, meaning you may only be 30 years old, but look 45!

Overcoming An Aging Face

If you think you  might be seeing early signs of aging on your face due to a lack of sleep, there are a few things you can do aside from attempting to lower the level of your stresses in everyday life and improving your sleep quality. At my practice in Charlotte, two of the best ways to overcome stubborn wrinkles, volume loss, and under eye hollows that give the appearance of dark circles are with Botox and facial fillers in Charlotte. Botox works through a series of injections to the facial muscles where wrinkling is occurring. After the injections, the muscles become temporarily frozen, resulting in a quick diminishment of their appearance. To help erase under eye circles and facial volume loss, my patients find facial fillers injections helpful. Facial fillers under the eyes can help to smooth out unwanted creases and plump up a once youthful area, immediately resulting in an improvement and awakened appearance.

What Is A Non-Surgical Browlift?

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Kulbersh NonSurgicalBrowlift4 large 300x203 What Is A Non Surgical Browlift? An aging face cannot be escaped, but it can be prolonged and managed. Often times, one of the biggest areas of concern for individuals is the brow region, as this part of our face tends to be utilized tremendously through our entire lives in making expressions. If a patient isn’t quite ready to undergo surgery to overcome forehead drooping or excessive fine lines and wrinkles, a great procedure that I often recommend is known as a non-surgical or liquid browlift in Charlotte that can be performed in one quick office visit.

What Is A Liquid Browlift?

A non-surgical or liquid browlift is a procedure that I perform at my office in Charlotte for individuals who are experiencing a slightly sagging brow with age or for those beginning to develop unwanted wrinkles and fine lines. As our brow begins to droop, it often results in excess skin becoming noticeable over our eyes, leaving a tired and aged appearance.

Depending on the severity of a drooping brow, I’ll develop a treatment plan comprised of chemicals like Botox or Dysport, facial fillers in Charlotte, or possibly both. A chemical browlift using Botox and Dysport actually helps to weaken the muscles that pull our brow downwards, therefore allowing it to be released upwards to its youthful resting position. When I use Botox or Dysport to help a patient overcome a drooping brow, I carefully inject the chemicals to continue to keep the muscles responsible for raising the eyebrows in their proper place, resulting in a very subtle and natural lift. When facial fillers are utilized during a liquid browlift, their main role is to help combat volume loss in the space directly above the eyebrows. By adding volume to this area, it pulls the skin outward and upward, creating a natural and balanced elevation.

Patients who often make excellent candidates to undergo the non-surgical procedure are those who are not quite yet seeing a dramatic aged appearance on their face, but who are only beginning to notice miniscule signs of volume loss, wrinkles, fine lines, and skin lax. Patients who are beginning to appreciate deep folds or extreme brow sagginess should consider a surgical browlift, which can be performed with the most advanced minimally invasive techniques to lessen recovery time, bruising, swelling, and pain associated with the procedure.

Top Secret Wrinkle Causing Routines

Kulbersh Cannula1 2 13 13 11 300x133 Top Secret Wrinkle Causing Routines

A non-surgical eyelift can smooth under eye wrinkles and replace lost volume.

We’re all aware of some of the major causes that bring early and unwanted wrinkles to our face such as sun exposure, not enough sleep, and caffeine. However, there are several habits that you may not realize can create wrinkles on your face. In this blog, I share some of the lesser known  habits with my patients in Charlotte that cause wrinkles on the face.

1. Stress

We have all heard the saying “Don’t make a sad face because it could  stay that way.” Although this is an old wives tale, there may be some truth to the statement. Because stress can cause a person to become worrisome and frown, the muscles in your face can actually conform to those movements, leading to marionette lines around the lips, crow’s feet around the eyes, and even 11 lines in the middle of your forehead. One of the best ways to prevent stress induced facial aging is to be aware of your level of stress. If you begin to feel stressed, try to relax by  taking  a deep breath, meditating,  or exercising.

2. Wearing Contacts

You’re probably thinking, “How in the world can wearing contacts cause my face to wrinkle?” Think about this—the average contact user puts contacts in their eyes and takes them out multiple times each day. When this takes place, the skin around your eyes becomes overly stretched due to the constant pulling mechanism of the skin around your eyelid, which in turn can lead to wrinkles. If you’re beginning to appreciate  wrinkles around your eyes and are a contact wearer, an easy and ideal treatment to fix crow’s feet is Botox, which I can inject in my office for my patients in Charlotte. Botox helps to relax the muscles around the eyes, making it difficult for the muscles to move and cause excess wrinkling.

3. Rubbing Your Face With A Towel

We’ve all done it—sometimes we’re running late in the morning, and our only choice is to wash our face quickly and dry our skin even faster. However, constantly rubbing our faces with towels can cause skin to stretch out and become wrinkled, especially in fragile areas under the eyes. Next time you wash your face, make sure you pat your skin dry with the towel—no more rubbing!

3 Ways To Get Rid Of Your Turkey Neck

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

liquid necklift charlotte 2 300x139 3 Ways To Get Rid Of Your Turkey NeckOne of the most common questions I’m asked at my practice in Charlotte is how a sagging neck can be improved. As individuals get deeper into the aging process, the skin near the jowls, under the chin, and on the neck begins to become less and less firm each year. To help my patients overcome what has been dubbed a “turkey neck,” I often suggest a few different neck rejuvenation treatments dependent on what type of the aging process the patient is in and what their ultimate goals are.

Necklift

If a patient comes to me and is experiencing severe sagging in their neck, the best option is almost always a surgical necklift to trim away excess skin and fat. At my practice in Charlotte, I believe that the best necklift results can be seen through lifting the deeper tissue and not just correcting the saggy outer layers. This not only brings a more natural result to my patients, but also ensures that they see longer lasting results for as many as ten years. After undergoing a necklift, patients can expect to feel better and be back to their everyday activities in just under two weeks.

Facial Liposuction

Even with diet and exercise, sometimes certain parts of our body don’t seem to lose all of the extra weight we’re carrying. For patients who are experiencing a sagging neck due to excess fat in the area, I often suggest they undergo a procedure called facial liposuction. Facial liposuction works to effectively remove additional fat from the neck and lower face or chin to bring better overall symmetry and proportion to the area. When I perform this procedure for my patients in Charlotte, I aim to improve the appearance of the face by contouring it to look more youthful while still maintaining a natural look. To help minimize recovery for my patients, I can perform the procedure under local anesthesia and use a cannula to gently remove fat without causing any additional trauma to the area.

Liquid Necklift

For patients who don’t want to undergo a procedure that requires any sort of incision, a liquid necklift can be a great option for the right individual. If I see a patient who is in the early process of neck aging and is experiencing minimal sagging and elasticity problems, I often suggest that these cosmetic problems be treated with a combination of facial fillers and Botox. Fillers are best used to help define the jawline.  Adding volume to this area with fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane defines the jawline and also pulls up the neck skin.

Bigger, Brighter Eyes With Botox

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Bigger, Brighter Eyes With BotoxAre sagging upper eyelids causing your eyes to look much smaller than they actually are? Using Botox around the eyes can correct this problem. Injecting Botox into the muscles that pull the eyebrows down can actually lift the brows and upper eyelid to stop the drooping. Botox is also great for erasing the crow’s feet that also add to an aging appearance around your eyes. Additionally, some patients will also benefit from tear trough or temple filler injections to correct hollowness and result in beautiful, youthful eyes.

When serious eyelid drooping or sagging is occurring, I often recommend patients undergo a procedure called blepharoplasty, which is designed for individuals facing more prominent signs of eye aging. During blepharoplasty, I’m able to trim away excess skin and reposition fat in and near the eyelids to rejuvenate their appearance.

Whenever you’re considering undergoing an injectable treatment for the first time, it’s very important to seek the expertise of an experienced facial plastic surgeon. Though there are risks with any cosmetic procedure, they become greatly diminished when you’re able to trust your surgeon and have an understanding of their background. Because I’m a board certified head and neck surgeon, I not only have a keen knowledge of facial aesthetics, but also understand function of the face, meaning that I can provide both safe and effective treatments for my patients in Charlotte.

Tips For Preventing Facial Aging

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Tips For Preventing Facial AgingGetting older brings several benefits to our lives—we become successful in our career, enjoy our families , possibly travel, and have the chance to have experiences that we always dreamed of. However, experiencing all of life’s wonders can take a toll on our face, which might include new wrinkles, fine lines, damage to the skin, and volume loss. As an expert facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte with an extensive knowledge in facial rejuvenation techniques to slow and diminish the aging process, I know that taking preventative measures is one of the best ways to keep a natural and youthful facial appearance well into your later years.

To help my patients overcome the aging process, I’ve gathered my best tips for delaying the onset of facial aging.

1. Prevention With Injections

When you think of getting older, I’d be willing to bet that you’re not excited to wake up one day and notice crow’s feet beginning to appear around your eyes! To prevent the formation of crow’s feet, I inject Botox to prevent their formation. Though Botox is most often use to diminish wrinkles after  they have  appeared, it can also be injected as a prevenative measure to prevent their formation in the first place.

2. Rinse, Lather, Repeat!

The face is exposed to UV light on a daily basis.  UV light causes damage to the skin causing brown spots, rough texture, large pores, and destroys the elastic compent of the skin.  I believe in using organic medical grade skin care to repair damage skin and keep the facial skin looking great.  I recommend Image Skin Care as it is free of petrochemicals and parabenes.  The using of daily skin care that repairs, protects, and heals is imperative for patients of all ages.  The continued use of chemical peels will only enhace the results and keep the skin looking bright for many years to come.

3. Collagen is Key

Perhaps the most important part in maintaining the youth in a face is the promotion of collagen within our skin. When a face maintains collagen production it look brighter, clearer, and more vibrant. To prevent wrinkles and volume loss from occurring early on, it’s a good idea to begin using anti-aging products in your early 20’s and use throughout life. If you’re unsure of which products to choose, select labels that include Retin-A, Renova, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid–a substance found naturally in your body which is also utilized in facial fillers.  These products are both safe and effective in a comprehensive skin treatment plan.

Dr. Kulbersh Predicts Most Sought After Celebrity Cosmetic Procedures for Award Show Season

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Julia Roberts Oscars 207x300 Dr. Kulbersh Predicts Most Sought After Celebrity Cosmetic Procedures for Award Show SeasonLights, camera, action—it’s officially that time of year! With the holiday season just behind us, it’s now time for members of Hollywood to get into tip-top shape and achieve a healthy facial glow that most people think is unattainable. However, as a facial plastic surgeon trained in Beverly Hills, I perform the very same treatments that celebrities will be seeking shortly before awards shows like the Oscar’s, the Emmy’s, and the Grammy’s at my office in Charlotte. I want to let my patients know how they too can achieve a similar look with my top three picks for this year’s award season.

1. Facial Fillers

At this year’s award shows, you can expect to see plenty of celebrities with refreshed looking faces due to facial filler injections—most commonly hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm or Restylane. Filler treatments are great because not only is the treatment itself quick with little to no downtime, but also provides immediate results as the fillers instantly plump up a face to replace lost volume. The use of facial fillers can be seen over a broad age range on the red carpet, with the treatment working wonders for both young stars needing to fight the initial signs of aging or to achieve the ever so popular “Angelina lips,” as well as for older celebrities using the treatment in conjunction with other surgical procedures, like a facelift or neck lift.

My patients at Carolina Facial Plastics can achieve the same look in just one office visit, where I’ll use a cannula in place of a needle to perform the filler treatment, resulting in less discomfort, bruising, and all around tissue damage.

2. Mini Facelift

Another popular treatment, known as the “mini-lift,” is a less invasive version of a full facelift that works to rejuvenate the lower third of the face, jowls, and neck. A mini-lift can take five years off of a person’s appearance, and even more when performed with other complimentary procedures like facial liposuction or fat grafting. Because the mini-lift is much less invasive than a typical facelift, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia.

To make sure they’re red-carpet-ready, celebrities must undergo the treatment a few months before attending award shows, as this is the typical recovery time for swelling, bruising, and discomfort to completely resolve.

3. Chemical Peels

It is a necessity that celebrities have their skin in tip top condition for the camera.  Skin that is vibrant, bright, and healthy can make the entire face shine.  I believe everyone should be on medical grade skin care products on a daily basis, but chemical peels can help accelerate the process.  One of the most popular skin peels I have at my office in Charlotte is the anti-oxidant enzyme peel.  It has the ability to hydrate the skin and remove the top layer of dead skin to give the skin the extra pop it needs for a special occasion.  This peel has no downtime and works in just a few days.

How Does Botox Work?

Friday, January 18th, 2013

How Does Botox Work? For the past several years, Botox has consistently been at the top of the list for most sought after cosmetic procedures. Year by year, the number of people seeking the treatment increases, and for good reasons—Botox is truly beneficial for people of all ages, races, and ethnicities, no matter what part of the aging process they are in. With so many people seeking Botox across the world and even at my practice in Charlotte, I wanted to take the time to explain to my patients something commonly overlooked: How does Botox actually work?

All About Botox

Simply put, Botox works by temporarily blocking nerves, which result in the inability to move facial muscles.  Muscle can cause wrinkles similar to an iron causing a wrinkle in a shirt.  Every time muscles move, they create a crease or wrinkle in the skin.  By weakening the muscle that causes the crease, it allows time for the skin to repair itself and the wrinkle softens and disappears overtime.   Though Botox is a very common treatment for middle-aged men and women seeking relief from the aging process, Botox injections can be extremely helpful in preventing the aging process in people in their 20’s and 30’s.  Botox in these patients can prevent the formation of some wrinkles and can also retrain the muscles to not move in a fashion that creates some wrinkles.

How Long Does Botox Take To Work?

According to a recent study by New Beauty Magazine, hundreds of women were asked how long they believed it took to see the final results of Botox treatments. Surprisingly, the answers ranged from 24 hours to 5 weeks! At my practice in Charlotte I typically advise patients that although everyone is different, it’s well-within normal range to see results from Botox injections between 2-5 days post treatment.

If you’re considering Botox injections, it’s important to visit an experienced injector for your treatment. Though Botox is an extremely safe procedure when properly performed, the procedure becomes much more risky when people don’t research their injectors, which can result in  unpleasing aesthetic results.

The Three S’s of Wrinkle Causing Habits

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

The Three S’s of Wrinkle Causing Habits Even when we’re young, we’re told by our parents about the importance of getting enough sleep and always wearing sunscreen to keep our appearance looking fresh and healthy. However, as we age, it’s extremely common to partake in everyday activities that we wouldn’t think twice about—even though they could be hurrying the aging process for us. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I’d like to share with my patients the three S’s that should be avoided to reduce the amount of fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

Smoking

It’s a well-documented fact that smoking can lead to premature aging of the skin. Not only does smoking involve toxic substances being put into our bodies, but also a constant mechanism of pursing our lips to inhale the cigarette. This reoccurring movement leads to unwanted lip lines, also known as smoker’s lines. Nicotine in cigarettes has also been directly linked to wrinkles, as it narrows blood vessels which makes it hard for blood to properly flow. This in turn causes less oxygen to be delivered to your skin and can result in wrinkles. Smokers often find that facial fillers can help reduce the appearance of unwanted lines.

Sipping

If you thought that you might not be at risk of developing lines around your lips and nose because you don’t smoke, think again. Much like smoking a cigarette, sipping on a straw has also been linked to marionette lines around our mouths. The constant sucking mechanism that occurs as we sip a drink through a straw increases the muscle movement around our mouths, which can result in unwanted lip lines in the area.  An easy method for avoiding sipping-related wrinkles is to opt out of using a straw to slurp easily drinkable beverages like water, juices, and sodas.

Sleeping

Lastly, a very common cause of wrinkles and deep lines on our faces can sometimes occur when we least expect it—while we’re sleeping. As a result of sleeping face down on a bed, you’re actually putting unnecessary pressure onto your face and sensitive facial skin, making it impressionable for deep lines and wrinkles. Continuing to sleep in this position night after night causes these sleep impressions to become permanent, which may require facial fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, or Perlane to correct them. Because the skin around our eyes is among the most sensitive and thinnest on our bodies, it’s very easy to damage, even while we’re sleeping. If you’ve already become a victim of sleep wrinkles, Botox has been proven to effectively combat their appearance.

Speak With Dr. Kulbersh Today

If you’re beginning to show signs of wrinkles and fine lines on your face, as an experienced Charlotte facial plastic surgeon, I can help you overcome these initial signs of aging with several different non-invasive facial filler procedures that aim to fill in deep lines and wrinkles in just one office visit. To learn more about whether or not you might be a good candidate for facial fillers or Botox, please call (704) 323-5090 to schedule your initial consultation. Remember, taking the initial steps to conquer the aging process early on may help reduce the amount of damage done to your skin as you continue to age.

Botox For Poker Players: Introducing Poker-tox

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

iStock 000016477216XSmall 300x214 Botox For Poker Players: Introducing Poker toxGet ready for a new trend in facial plastic surgery: pokertox. With the rise in popularity of both poker and Botox, it seems like a natural progression. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte who specializes in injectable treatments like Botox, I’d like to share the idea behind pokertox.

What Is Pokertox?

Coined by a cosmetic surgeon, Pokertox involves a regimen of Botox with the aim to help a poker player manage their poker face. A poker face is the ability to hide any unconscious signs about a poker players hand that may give his fellow players clues to if he has a good or bad hand. If you’ve ever participated in poker, it’s easy to realize how important it is to have a good “poker face”.

Take this, for example. Let’s say you’re playing a game of cards, and you’re dealt a great hand. Without even realizing it, you’ve probably moved or twitched small areas arounds your eyes. These tiny movements can be identified by other players at the table and may give insight on the player’s hand and ultimately be the difference of winning and losing thousands of dollars. Poker players that have typical facial movements that might give away their poker face are turning to Botox. Botox is injected into specific muscles in the face to weaken or paralyze them. Poker players are now using Botox to help create their poker face and we get the term, pokertox.

Some players believe pokertox can give them a slight advantage while others disagree and believe that poker relies heavily on the betting trends of opponents, skill, and experience. I personally believe in a competitive game of poker where thousands of dollars are at stake, if Botox can help you win by preventing a movement in your face that can give away your hand, then it could be a great option.

 Botox At Carolina Facial Plastics

When it comes to Botox, believe that if the procedure can provide you with the goals that you’re looking to achieve and is done in the correct hands, the procedure is safe and effective., No matter whether or not you’re a poker player or a middle-aged woman, it’s apparent that Botox has many uses from smoothing wrinkles, preventing excess sweating in the armpits, shrinking large masseter muscles and improving ones poker face.
