Uses for Facial Fillers Continue to Expand

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Facial fillers, such as Perlane, Restylane, or Juvederm have many uses to improve facial aesthetics.  The standard uses that are commonly used are:

-  Filling in the tear trough  (eye bags)

-  Improving smile lines

-  Helping to define the cheekbones

- Creating a stronger chin

In addition, there is one tell-tale sign of aging that is typically neglected, and that is the earlobe.  As we age, the earlobe get stretched out, elongates, and becomes thin.   This area can be easily treated to help achieve a balanced look during facial rejuvenation procedures.

A young earlobe is full of volume, without wrinkles, and not stretched.

An elderly earlobe is thin, wrinkled, and stretched.

The Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery did a recent demonstration to the New York media using facial fillers to give volume to the earlobe.  I am glad to see that they are bringing awareness to this use for fillers, and I will also increase awareness of the use of earlobe fillers for my patients here in Charlotte.

I believe that there is a lack of consideration for the earlobe during facelifts in Charlotte. Typically, patients undergoing a facelift have long and thin earlobes that do not look harmonious after the surgery.  During the facelift, I will shorten the earlobe to a youthful proportion that helps bring the face into balance.  This can also be done as a stand-alone procedure in the office.

Facial plastic aesthetics, procedures, and surgeries are dependent on accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, and attention to small details.  I believe one small detail that should not be overlooked is evaluation and treatment of the earlobes.
