Chin Implants Are On The Rise!

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

ChinImplant Rhinoplasty6 large Chin Implants Are On The Rise!Chin implants are an effective and subtle way to create facial harmony with natural results, which is precisely why this particular surgery is on the rise! Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that almost 20,700 patients have opted for chin implants, a 71% increase in the procedure since 2010. This increase could be a product of more people using video chatting services or video cameras on their phones. People who believe they have a “weak” or “soft” chin are increasing appreciating this disproportion.  A chin that fits the face can greatly improve the harmony of the face especially from the profile or three quarter view.

What can I expect during a Chin Implant Procedure?

Chin implants in North Carolina are a relatively simple and fast procedure. Depending on the type of procedure right for you, a patient could be in and out of my office in Charlotte in only a couple hours. The procedure consists of making a small incision underneath the chin where it is hidden.  From the incision the the chin implant is place onto the bottom aspect of the jaw.  This immediately creates more prominent and well-defined chin. Most implants are made from synthetics, such as silicone.  I use silicone in over 90% of my patients.  I choose a silicone implant because it has a low rate of infection and can be easily removed.

What to expect after the surgery?

For the first week after surgery, there will be swelling and possibly bruising. and a bandage that will be worn.  After 1 week, the bandage and stitches will be removed in the office.  Over the next 2-3 months, the swelling will subside and the patient can appreciate the look of their new chin.  Most patients often feel better and up to returning to their light every day activities after one week.

Watch Dr. Kulbersh talk about chin implants in Charlotte in this YouTube video.

Is there an alternative to having a chin implant?

If you want improved definition in your jawline but do not want an implant I have quite a few options available to my patients. As an expert injector in Charlotte, I often recommend products such as Restylane, Perlane and collagen stimulators (Sculptra) to help create a larger chin or improve a recessed chin. The injectables help to define the jawline, which can reduce fine lines and wrinkles along the upper neck and chin. In addition, I can place fillers in your cheeks, temples, or nose to create a better facial definition and improve the overall symmetry of your face.

4 Ways To Ensure Proper Healing After Cosmetic Surgery

4 Ways To Ensure Proper Healing After Cosmetic SurgeryThere are several reasons why someone may undergo cosmetic surgery—perhaps they’ve been thinking about improving  their appearance for quite some time, or maybe they’re just looking to maintain their look. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I believe one of the most important parts of facial plastic surgery is making sure that my patients know the best ways to keep their skin looking great and ensure the best healing in the weeks and months after their procedure. In this blog, I share some of my tips for making sure your skin stays healthy, natural, and youthful.

1. Minimize Sun Exposure

If you’ve undergone aprocedure like a facelift or rhinoplasty, it’s very important to be aware of the amount of time your spending outside in the first few months. Though this time should be limited, if you do need to spend time outdoors it’s crucial to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30. This helps ensure that the suns harmful rays will not do damage to the skin or discolor the incisions.

2. Use Mild Products

In the weeks following your facial plastic surgery, it’s a great idea to baby your skin and only use products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free. This helps to make sure you’re skin won’t become irritated and will reduce the amount of redness that you might be experiencing post-procedure.   At my office, we have a line of image skin care products that are specifically designed to be used after surgery.  We also carry a line of mineral makeup that is both safe and healing to skin after surgery while covering up any bruising that may be present.

3. It’s All About H20

No matter what type of procedure you’ve had, surgical or non-invasive, it’s recommended to drink plenty of water.Wather helps to cleans the skin from the inside out by flushing toxins that could be in in your system.

4. Be Patient

It’s very important to remember that everyone heals differently and experiences results at different times. No matter how much you’re tempted to pick at any scabs or peeling skin, don’t!  Doing so could cause additional scabbing and even potential scarring. Being patient during the recovery process is necessary to ensure you see the best results possible, and allowing your skin to heal naturally is sure to provide you with just that.

Important Questions To Ask Your Facial Plastic Surgeon

Friday, December 28th, 2012

Important Questions To Ask Your Facial Plastic SurgeonAs a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I perform cosmetic surgeries for my patients on a daily basis. However, one of the most important steps that occurs before a person ever undergoes surgery is the initial consultation.   During the consultation, I listen to the patient’s questions and concerns, and I educate my patients on the aging process.  I then explain where they are in the aging process and then I give them all of the treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical.  I encourage them to ask me any questions they might have about the procedures, so that they have a clear understanding. I find this places patients at ease as they know what to expect in regards to the process and anticipated goals.

If you’re seeking the help of a facial plastic surgeon, I’ve compiled a list of what I believe to be the important questions to ask.

1. Are my ideal results realistic?

Being a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I know that having realistic goals is one of the most important steps in achieving my patient’s goals. I aim to provide my patients with results that are both realistic and natural through creating facial harmony and balance.  Understand the realistic final results is an integral step in moving forward with the surgical process.

2. Can I look at your before and after pictures?

Viewing a surgeons before and after images relating to the procedure you’re seeking will help you get a better idea of the kinds of results they’ve produced in the past, and whether or not you feel their skills would be a good match for you.

3. What will recovery be like following my procedure?

This, of course, varies depending on which type of cosmetic surgery you’ll be undergoing.  A recovery for a facelift differs from that of a rhinoplasty, and vice versa. However, depending on your personal schedule and life activities, it’s important to understand what your unique recovery will be like so that necessary arrangements can be made.  I tend to overestimate the recovery process with my patients as I prefer them to plan on taking more time than needed instead of having to go back to their life/work when they are not ready.

4. What are the risks that come along with facial plastic surgery?

All procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, have risks.  At my practice, I tell my patients that having your cosmetic procedure performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon reduces risks, and if a complication occurs, I am capable to treat it in a prompt and proper fashion.

5. Are you an experienced facial plastic surgeon?

Lastly, making sure that your surgeon is experienced is important. I would check to see if your surgeon is fellowship trained and board certified in a related facial plastic surgery field. I am a board certified head and neck surgeon who completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, which means that my understanding of the face and facial aesthetics is solely focused on the face and neck. This allows me to provide a unique and experienced service to my patients.

Plastic Surgery: Not Just For Women

Plastic Surgery: Not Just For WomenIf you looked at a typical bathroom counter of a man and woman, you would see differences between the two areas.  Men typically have a toothbrush, razor, cologne, and possibly some eye care products.  Woman may have a combination of hair dryers, straighteners, blush, foundation, eye liner, facial creams, facial masks, etc.  It’s no secret that women have a few more products on the market as opposed to men. In many places, it is more socially acceptable for women to take small steps to start fighting the aging process. Small steps can be considered dying their hair, makeup techniques, and using medical grade skin care.

However, at the risk of being viewed as unmanly, a man is less likely to start taking the steps to help him age gracefully or enhance his natural good looks.  He  could borrow his wife’s moisturizer, but what happens if his buddies find out? With ‘baby-boomer’ men perhaps being the first group of middle-aged males to ever consider different types of plastic surgery, there is one major difference in providing cosmetic procedures for men rather than women—they don’t want to look like they’ve had anything done.

The Best Plastic Surgeries For Men

As an experienced facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I understand the importance of customizing all facial plastic surgery procedures for men. One of the most important things that I try to do when providing surgeries for males is to make sure that their facial features are balanced, and that no one can figure out why they look so good for their age.

Because striving for a natural result is so important, there are several different surgeries for men that can help turn back the aging process without raising an excessive amount of suspicion. At Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, I often perform the following cosmetic procedures for men.

Botox

If you’re looking for a procedure that is quick, painless, and offers results extremely fast, Botox might be right for you. Botox can help reduce the fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet that appear on our faces with age. When using Botox on males, I make sure to leave movement in the face.  I can use Botox to soften the wrinkles of the forehead and between the eyes, but in a way where the patient is still able to move his eyebrows.  I think this creates the best and most natural result for my male patients having Botox in Charlotte.  After just one treatment, you’ll notice a refreshed looking appearance.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelift, can help rid a man of the excess skin around his upper eyelids or the puffy, dark lower eyelid bags that occur as we age. Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that takes just over an hour to perform, and the results of the surgery can create eyes that give off a more awake and more alert appearance.  Blepharoplasty technique is different when compared to women.  In males, I keep the incisions lower on the eye to create a low eyelid crease.  A high eyelid crease can feminize an eye and create an unnatural result.

Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are a great choice for men who want to put volume back into their face that has been slowly lost over time. Fillers are fantastic for treating smile lines, under eye circles, and can even help reshape the jawline, create a stronger chin or diminish under eye circles. Other great procedures for men include facelifts, neck lifts, and chin augmentation.

Top Plastic Surgery Procedures For Men & Women in 2012

Browlift 264x300 Top Plastic Surgery Procedures For Men & Women in 2012As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I have the opportunity to help many people achieve an aesthetic goal that they’ve been wanting for quite some time. Over the years, plastic surgery trends change based on several different factors, including new minimally invasive techniques and certain media attention. With a new year just around the corner, I wanted to share my take on the most popular plastic surgery trends of 2012.

Top Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures For Women in 2012

1. Botox
2. Facial Fillers
3. Rhinoplasty
4. Facelift/Neck lift
5. Blepharoplasty

With Botox and Facial Fillers rounding out the top of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in 2012, it’s clear that minimally invasive procedures that can produce great results are becoming more and more important to female patients. Treatments like Botox and other injectables like Juvederm and Restylane offer fantastic results that can turn back the aging process in just one quick office visit, requiring no down time and allowing the patient to return to their normal everyday activities immediately.

Lastly, rhinoplasty, facelift/neck lift, and blepharoplasty complete the “top plastic surgery procedures for women” list at Carolina Facial Plastics. This can be largely attributed to the fact that invasive surgical procedures offer a more permanent appearance and can better assist patients who wish to achieve certain cosmetic goals, even if they are further into the aging process. As we can also notice, all of these procedures focus entirely on very important aspects of the face that can draw unwanted attention if not tended to as we age. When a patient comes to me and expresses interest in procedures on this list, I work with them to provide a customized cosmetic surgery that will bring them the best outcomes and results.

Top Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures For Men in 2012

1. Botox
2. Blepharoplasty
3. Brow Lift
4. Chin Augmentation
5. Facial Fillers

Though Botox was also the number one plastic surgery sought by men at Carolina Facial Plastics in 2012, the bottom portion of the list tends to differ. Men largely care about the appearance of their eyes, which is why blepharoplasty is often a great choice for candidates who are experiencing saggy upper eyelids or droopy lower eyelids. An increase in brow lifts and chin augmentation procedures can be attributed to the new and widespread presence of the use of social media in our society. Because we’re able to see more and more pictures and videos of ourselves, we’re beginning to notice more about our appearance that we haven’t before, which is resulting in more cosmetic procedures.

Is Video Chatting Leading To More Facial Plastic Surgery?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

lip augmentation before after Is Video Chatting Leading To More Facial Plastic Surgery? In an age where technology continues to  rapidly advance, so does the role that it plays in our lives. With the rise of  Facebook, Twitter, and Skype, people are constantly viewing photos and videos of themselves on an everyday basis.  While evaluating our appearances in these mediums, people are able to see themselves from multiple angles, profiles, three-quarters views, etc.  Historically, people evaluate their aging faces from the frontal angle of a mirror.  With the advent of the new technology and the ability to view our faces from multiple angles on a regular basis, patients are able to appreciate the changes in their face as we age.  I believe this ability to more thoroughly evaluate the facial structure through technology is leading to an increase in facial cosmetic procedures.

For example, when a person is video chatting, they’re often looking slightly downward, which can accentuate a weak chin.  Viewing ourself from the profile, we can see the loss of definition in the jawline or the droopiness or hooking of the nose.  In all of these cases, we are  able get to see our appearances from multiple angles as we age.

At Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, I listen to my patients concerns and will offer several different surgical and non-surgical facial cosmetic procedures that can help a person achieve their desired look.

Lip Augmentation

As one of the most sensitive areas of the face, it’s necessary to visit an experienced facial plastic surgeon when seeking lip augmentation or correction surgery.   With my patients, I start off conservatively during lip augmentation.  With adding volume to the lips, it is always easier to add more volume than to remove it.  I also understand that people want their lips to appear natural, and my technique prevents the “done” or duck lip appearance.  At Carolina Facial Plastics, I use a needle-less filler technique, a cannula, which offers patients a much more comfortable approach to attaining their desired appearance while still providing the same great care and results.  I also inject in the deep fat pad of the lip that prevents the unnatural result that many patients experience during a lip augmentation procedure.   A lip augmentation can be tailored uniquely to the needs of the individual interested in the procedure, making it completely customizable and a great solution for those who wish to add a touch of volume to their lips.

Chin Augmentation

Another common problem area that is gaining more interest from patients is the chin. When someone sees their face on a computer screen or phone screen, its generally for much longer  than they would notice if they were to take a quick glance in the mirror, which leaves them to analyze their appearance in greater depth. A chin implant or a non-surgical chin augmentation is often a great solution for those wishing to correct a weak or soft chin or a short jaw line. Deciding to undergo a chin implant can improve the overall appearance and balance of the face and facial features.

As a specialist in chin augmentation, I take the time to explain to my patients that because the chin and nose have a close relationship,  there interaction can either provide balance or disproportion to the face.   For this reason, many times patients undergoing a rhinoplasty will also undergo a chin augmentation to provide the best results.

How To Correct A Crooked Nose

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

How To Correct A Crooked NoseTo improve facial harmony, many times patients seek rhinoplasty surgery in Charlotte to straighten a crooked nose.  Absolute facial symmetry is not a goal of facial aesthetics as everyone has minor differences between the two sides of the face.  This is true when evaluating the facial features of supermodels, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Carmen Electra.  When people have obvious facial asymmetries, the eyes of onlookers are focused away from the eyes and smile to the obvious facial asymmetry.  One of the most common obvious facial asymmetries is a crooked nose.

A crooked nose will take attention away from a person’s beautiful smile or gorgeous eyes.  In evaluating a person with a crooked nose, it is important to understand the cause.  Common causes of a crooked nose are:

1)     Result of trauma:  History of a fight, car accident, or strike to the nose

2)     Congenital:  Patient born with a crooked nose

The nose is composed of bone and cartilage that is covered with skin, muscle, and fat.  The top part of the nose is the bony part, and the lower flexible part of the nose is the cartilage.  In evaluating a crooked nose, I first identify if the bone, cartilage, or both parts of the nose are crooked.  If the bone is crooked, osteotomies (breaking the nasal bones) must be done to straighten the nose.  If the cartilage is crooked, then other rhinoplasty techniques must be performed.  Typical procedures that may be performed to straighten the cartilaginous portion of the nose are:

1)     Septoplasty- Correcting a deviated septum

2)     Swinging door technique-  Correct a deviated septum at the entrance of the nose

3)     Spreader grafts-  Improve breathing, build of the nose, and straighten the nose

4)     Onlay grafts-  Re-build  a collapsed section of the nose to increase symmetry

5)     Columellar strut-  Help straighten a deviated tip

6)     Tongue and groove-  Powerful technique to straighten a deviated tip

As you can see, there are many techniques that I use to straighten a crooked or deviated nose for my patients in Charlotte.  I may have to use 1 or all of the above techniques to create a nose that is straighter and allow a patient to be able to easily breath for the rest of their lives.

Did Kim Kardashian Have Plastic Surgery in Mexico?

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

After training in Beverly Hills as a facial plastic surgery specialist, I learned that celebrities are very private about their plastic surgery.  They will not allow a doctor to use their before and after pictures or endorse a facial plastic surgeon.  One plastic surgeon figured out how to get a celebrity endorsement despite these requests by putting a picture of Kim Kardashian on a billboard in Mexico to promote his practice without her permission.

It is illegal to use patient’s pictures without their written consent as it violates the health information and privacy act (HIPPA).  I am not sure what this guy was thinking, but he is going to feel the wrath of the Kardashian legal team.

Successful Face Transplants

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Charla Nash was recently the first recipient of a successful facial transplant procedure following a devastating attack by a chimpanzee.  She recently appeared on TV to allow the world to see her progress.   It is an amazing feat of modern medicine to successfully perform this procedure.

Since her facial transplant in May of 2011, 20 other similar procedures have been completed.   A patient in Turkey received a successful face transplant just one month ago.  As a facial plastic surgery specialist, I can tell you that a patient in need of shaving their transplanted face just one month after surgery means it was a success.  This work is truly amazing.

Is Plastic Surgery the New Indicator of the Economy?

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

The economy and facial plastic surgery in Charlotte are different today than they were during the “good times.”  As the economy is slowly recovering, do you think plastic surgery trends could be an indicator for the economy’s future?
