Is it Safe to Have a Chin Implant with Filler Already Injected into the Chin?

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Many patients often ask me if it is safe to have a chin implant implanted when there is currently filler in the chin area.  As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, it is safe to have a chin implant with filler in your chin.  My one concern is that it might be difficult to choose the correct size implant. If filler is currently augmenting your chin, then it might be hard to choose the correct size chin implant.  If a chin implant is placed inside the chin while there is filler, as the filler re-absorbs, the chin may begin to look small.

If  hyaluranic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane were used for non-surgical chin augmentation, they can be dissolved by the injections of a medication.  Sculptra or Radiesse are also commonly used as fillers to augment the chin.   These substance cannot be removed.

There are some advantages to undergo a surgical chin implant opposed to recieving injections in the chin, which might appear similar to the look of an implant:

-  The implant is permanent

-  The implant does not require repeat treatment

-  The implant, over-time, will cost less than a lifetime of injections of fillers

Change in Profile with a Placement of a Chin Implant

I believe fillers in the chin can be a great non-surgical option for a patient that wants to see possible results of a chin implant.  Fillers can be placed in the chin, and the patient can see if they like their appearance of a larger chin.  A larger chin will also improve the neck line and jowls.  If patients are adverse to surgery, repeat injections of facial fillers to augment the chin are a great option.

Prescription and Homeopathic Medications that May Cause Bleeding or Bruising

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

During non-surgical and surgical facial rejuvenation in Charlotte, we want to minimize bleeding both during and after the procedure.  During a non-surgical procedure like Botox, Dysport, or injectable fillers, (Restylane, Perlane, or Juvederm) bleeding from the injection may cause a bruise.  During surgery, bleeding can make the surgery more difficult and create bruising.  At Carolina Facial Plastics, we strive to minimize downtime and bruising.  We want our patients to know the prescription and homeopathic medications that thin the blood and interfere with the body’s ability to clot.  These should be avoided 10-14 days before any procedure.

Uses for Facial Fillers Continue to Expand

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Facial fillers, such as Perlane, Restylane, or Juvederm have many uses to improve facial aesthetics.  The standard uses that are commonly used are:

-  Filling in the tear trough  (eye bags)

-  Improving smile lines

-  Helping to define the cheekbones

- Creating a stronger chin

In addition, there is one tell-tale sign of aging that is typically neglected, and that is the earlobe.  As we age, the earlobe get stretched out, elongates, and becomes thin.   This area can be easily treated to help achieve a balanced look during facial rejuvenation procedures.

A young earlobe is full of volume, without wrinkles, and not stretched.

An elderly earlobe is thin, wrinkled, and stretched.

The Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery did a recent demonstration to the New York media using facial fillers to give volume to the earlobe.  I am glad to see that they are bringing awareness to this use for fillers, and I will also increase awareness of the use of earlobe fillers for my patients here in Charlotte.

I believe that there is a lack of consideration for the earlobe during facelifts in Charlotte. Typically, patients undergoing a facelift have long and thin earlobes that do not look harmonious after the surgery.  During the facelift, I will shorten the earlobe to a youthful proportion that helps bring the face into balance.  This can also be done as a stand-alone procedure in the office.

Facial plastic aesthetics, procedures, and surgeries are dependent on accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, and attention to small details.  I believe one small detail that should not be overlooked is evaluation and treatment of the earlobes.

The Locations of Fat in the Face and How I Use This Information with Facial Fillers

Why is knowledge of the anatomy important when injecting facial fillers in Charlotte?

All surgeons must master the human anatomy before they can operate.  In facial plastic surgery, the difference of a few millimeters can be the difference between good and great results.

There are many options for facial fillers (Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Sculptra) in Charlotte.  As a facial cosmetic surgeon, I believe a mastery of the facial anatomy is a per-requisite for using facial fillers.  I use my knowledge of the facial fat compartments while injecting facial fillers, and believe that this knowledge is the difference between mediocre and great results.

What is my unique approach to using facial fillers?

The standard approach is to inject a facial filler to fill a specific line.  This is most commonly done to fill “smile lines” in Charlotte.  While this may be the result some patients are looking for, I believe there are better ways to inject which produce an even better outcome.  All young people have smile lines and I believe overfilling them produces unnatural looking results.

In my opinion, fillers should be used to fill in areas of the face that have lost volume.  We know that a loss of fat in specific compartments of the face is one aspect that contributes to facial aging.  The different compartments are:

When I analyze a face for possible filler injections, I look to fill the specific fat departments that have lost volume.  When volume is replaced from the location where it was lost, it creates the best results for my patients.  I can also fill different fat pads to help correct areas of concern for my patients.

What should patients be asking when considering facial fillers in Charlotte?

Often patients will ask what the best facial filler is for their specific situation.  While there are many different fillers, different locations in the face to use those facial fillers, and many different techniques for injections, I believe the most important part of using facial fillers in Charlotte is choosing the most qualified injector.
